2011

January 4
Governor Salmaan Taseer was shot dead for wanting amendments to Pakistan’s blasphemy laws after Aasia Noreen was sentenced to death for allegedly committing blasphemy.

January 6
Muhammad Ishaq was sentenced to life imprisonment by a session’s court in Bahawalpur for ‘being a black magician’ and allegedly burning a copy of the Quran.

January 7
A muslim prayer leader Mohammad Shafi and his son Mohammad Aslam were jailed for life after being arrested in April 2010 for allegedly removing poster advertising an Islamic event after it was over.

January 8
Kot Addu – Mohammad Amjad, believed to be mentally challenged, is accused of committing blasphemy along with his father and a relative. The case was filed at the request of local cleric Mohammad Sajid. (Section 295-B, PPC Section 109)

January 17
Karachi – Shahnawaz filed an FIR against Muhammad Javed of Dullewala. He claimed that he had received text messages from an unknown cell number that contained blasphemous remarks.

January 26
A woman named Amina accused her sister-in-law Zahira of blasphemy after an argument the night before. Zahira’s house was raided and she was beaten up. Zahira’s mother was also tortured. The leader of this torture squad, according to news sources, is said to be one named Muhammad Sameer, who belongs to the same religious group as that of Mumtaz Qadri, killer of Punjab’s ex-governor Salman Taseer early this month.

January 28
Okara  – Syed Samiullah, 17, was accused of blasphemy for allegedly writing blasphemous remarks in his exam answer-sheets. (Section 295-C)

January 29
A teenage boy Samiullah was arrested for allegedly writing blasphemous material on his examination answer sheets. Board of Intermediate Education Karachi (BIEK) Controller of Examinations Agha Akbar Mirza said “it was the boy’s neck or mine.”

January 30
Two brothers Shahnawaz and Ilyas were imprisoned over allegedly stealing copies of the Quran and burying them in the courtyard of their house.

January 31
Mansehra – Shahnawaz and another man were accused of blasphemy for allegedly stealing copies of the Quran and burying them in a courtyard.

February 2
In Bahawalpur, additional district and sessions judge Malik Riaz Ahmed Khokhar handed down a death sentence along with Rs. 0.2 million fine for Jalalpur Peerwala. His crime was reportedly wearing a wooden slab hanging around his neck inscribed with blasphemous remarks.

February 6
Shopkeeper Shafique was arrested in Okara for tying a shoe to a flag bearing a holy symbol.

February 7
Rival Muslim sects registered cases against each other in Rawalpindi after clashes with each other.

February 8
In Multan pitted Dr Jalal against his brother Noor Khan. One followed a Deoband school of thought, and one followed Barelvi. Noor Khan’s sons were setting up a preaching centre opposite the house which apparently annoyed Dr. Jalal.

February 16
Karachi – According to the Pakistan Christian Post, Agnes Nuggo was charged of blasphemy by a group of Muslims who failed to acquire a plot of land from her. (Section 295-A)

February 20
A schoolteacher was was beaten up by a mob and thereafter booked by the Bhakkar police for allegedly disrespecting the images of holy places and the footprint of the Holy Prophet.

February 21
In Faislabad, the dispute on a residential plot among communities ended up in arrest of Christian woman under accusation of blasphemy charges by Muslims.

February 26
In Multan, Muhammad Javed was accused of blasphemy because his friend allegedly sent a blasphemous text from his phone. Shahnawaz, his friend, was rounded up for blasphemy too.

February 27
In Karachi, a mentally ill person (Yacoob) was accused of burning leaves of the Quran and accused of blasphemy. Yaqoob’s father shows documents to the police to prove his son is mentally ill.

Tehmina Durrani, wife of CM Shahbaz Sharif, was accused of blasphemy for a book she wrote a few years ago.

March 2
Shahbaz Bhatti, Federal Minister for Minorities was gunned down in Islamabad for condemning Salmaan Taseer’s murder and wanting amendments in the blasphemy law.

March 4
A man accused in a blasphemy case was shot dead on the outskirts of Rawalpindi. Mohammad Imran was gunned down by three masked men near a bus stand in Danda village of Rawalpindi, a garrison city adjacent to the capital Islamabad, the Dawn newspaper reported.

March 15
Qamar David, a Christian convict accused of blasphemy in 2006 was found dead in his prison cell. Prison guards claimed it was due to a heart attack, but David’s family and lawyer maintain David was in good health. The histopathology report is underway.

March 23
Hardliner clerics from different mosques announced that the local Christians from the church deliberately burnt the pages of the holy Quran at a heap of garbage in the area. Muslim and Christian clerics a reached peace agreement with the condition that church authorities would suspend activities, especially at the time when Muslims living in the area offer prayers.

On March 25
In Sialkot, Faiz Ahmed allegedly tore apart the posters affixed by the Tehrik-i-Minhajul Quran inside Jamia Masjid Ahle Sunnat. Pesh Imam announced the incident on loudspeaker. People gathered, protested, and lynched. He was taken into custody.

March 25
Satrah police in Daska Tehsil registered a case against Abid Shah for allegedly speaking against the companions of the Holy Prophet (PBUH).

March 26
Gilgit-Baltistan joined the league of the country’s other self-righteous areas after the region’s first-ever blasphemy case was registered against a man who allegedly passed contemptuous comments against the Holy Prophet. A case was registered under the blasphemy law against Yaqoob Shah, son of Taifur Shah. Yaqoob is said to be a resident of Ghizer Valley, which is about 75 kilometres from Gilgit. SP Azam said that the man had been arrested and police had started an investigation into the case. The incident was reported at about 5.30 pm in Kondodas and the news spread like wildfire. Hundreds of people gathered outside the police station, calling for the man’s immediate arrest. As the crowd grew larger, shopkeepers closed their shops in anticipation of violence. The crowd, however, dispersed after police registered a case under the sections 295, 296, 298, 500, 506 of the Pakistan Penal Code (blasphemy law).

March 30
Lahore – Shadbagh resident Qasim lodged an FIR against Irfan Rafique. Qasim said that he had received a text message which contained derogatory language about Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him). He said that he and three others discovered that Rafique used the number from which the text message was sent. (Section 295-C)

April 7
An additional district and sessions judge (AD&SJ) dismissed the plea for registration of a case under the blasphemy law against Dr Waseem Ajmal, the managing director (MD) of Solid Waste Management (SWM) department. A parliamentary committee of the Punjab Assembly had ordered the police to register an FIR against him.

April 9
In an apparent retaliation of the burning of the Holy Quran in Florida, a Muslim youngster tore into pieces a copy of the Bible at the entrance of a Lahore church and also tried to burn it before being caught red-handed. The incident happened outside Saint Joseph’s Church, situated on Lawrence Road, as Christians were busy in their religious services ahead of Good Friday. Sources in the Civil Lines Police Station said they have registered an FIR against the accused under section 295-A of the Pakistan Penal Code and arrested him. The offender, if convicted, could be jailed for 10 years.

April 13
Pakistan’s blasphemy vigilantes killed an exonerated man, Mohamed Imran, Two weeks after he returned to his small patch of farmland on the rustic outskirts of Islamabad, two gunmen burst into the shoe shop where he sat talking to a friend, and opened fire on him.

April 15
Gujranwala police took two Christian men into protective custody after people tried to spark violence by accusing them of desecrating the Quran and committing blasphemy against Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him) (Sections 295-B, 295-C)

April 16
The Pakistan embassy in Washington sough to re investigate a blasphemy case against an American national who had been arrested in July 2009 on blasphemy charges.

April 17
A Gojra-like incident in Gujranwala was narrowly averted after police took two Christian men into protective custody after some elements tried to create havoc and falsely accuse them of blasphemy charges.

April 19
Mardan  – Ebadullah was accused by his father of desecrating the Quran. (Section 295-B)

April 19
A man who murdered 2 Christian men who had allegedly committed blasphemy was sentenced to death and fined by an ATC in Faislabad.

April 20
In Faisalabad, an ATC fined and sentenced to death a man who had killed two Christian brothers accused of blasphemy last year

April 21
The Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) sues Lahore DCO Ahad Cheema for blasphemy. The decision was taken in a meeting of the SIC hierarchy in Lahore. A complaint was submitted at a proper forum within two to three days. Blasphemy laws were invoked for the purported desecration of the Holy Prophet’s (PBUH) name inscribed on hoardings, billboards and banners of the organisation which were removed on the orders of the DCO from various parts of the city.

April 29
65 followers of Pir Gohar Shahi fled away from Pakistan to India to save them from persecution on blasphemy charges. They were put in jail after they refused to go back to their country. Now the UN has categorized them as refugees. There are 19 women, 7 children, and 39 men.

May 1
Hundreds of activists of religious parties turned violent in Gujranwala and attacked a Christian seminary, a church as well as houses of Christians- including a pastor. The protestors also smashed a Christian missionary school. 50 people were injured.

May 24
Extremist Muslims lodged a blasphemy case against a handicap Christian in Lahore. His family have fled their homes after a Muslim mob threatened to harm them

May 26
Sargodha – Basharat arrested on charges of allegedly sending text messages that contained blasphemous content about the companions of Prophet Mohammad. (Sections 295-A, 298-A)

July 2
Karachi – 25-year-old Muslim arrested, accused of burning the Holy Quran

July 29
Karachi– Printing press owner and colleague arrested after being accused of printing a book with allegedly blasphemous material. (Section 295-A)

September 26
Havelian  13 years old Christian girl expelled from her school on accusation of blasphemy on misspelling poetry term dedicated to praise Prophet Mohammad fled from her hometown with her family for safety of life. The protests in town of Havelian erupted yesterday to file charges of blasphemy against Faryal Tauseef Bhatti, student of Sir Syed High School.

October 5
Chakwal  seminary run by a member of the Tehrik Khuddam Ahl-i-Sunnat, Junaid Ahmed 20, took permission from his teacher to dispose of some fragments of the Quran in a manner he believed was permitted. As he was doing so, a passer-by raised alarm and a mob soon gathered. Considering that violence has become a part of the Pakistani psyche, the boy was severely beaten and later arrested on blasphemy charges. He now sits in Jhelum prison in judicial lockup.

Islamabad  March 2 – Federal
Minister for Minorities Affairs Shahbaz Bhatti assassinated. The Punjab Taliban
and Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan claimed responsibility.

Rawalpindi  March 5 – Mohammad
Imran, who was released along with Sajid Mehmood on February 13, 2010, was
sitting at a shop near a bus stand in Danda village when three masked gunmen
killed him.

Karachi

March 15 – Qamar David, who was serving a life sentence in two
blasphemy cases, dies in Central Jail. Jail officials say he died of a heart
attack, but his lawyer said he had been in good health. His autopsy report was
not made public. (Sections 295-A, 295-C)

Lahore July 17 – Shaukat Ali, who was serving a sentence after being
convicted on blasphemy charges, dies at Services Hospital. Jail officials say
he died of natural causes, but his family said they were unaware he was unwell.

9th September
2011 a Pakistani Christian Aslam Masih accused of blasphemy died in prison  from treatable
illness(dengue fever) .

Karachi January 18 – Amar Ali and Nazia Amar, who were accused of
desecrating the Holy Quran and Hadith in Sialkot, protested at the press club
and denied the allegations.

Islamabad January 31 –Senator Humayun Mandokhel discusses activist Marvi
Sirmed in the Senate, who had invited him to Salmaan Taseer’s chehlum and
used the word ‘shaheed’ (martyr) to
refer to him in a text message, which he disagreed to. Mandokhel asked to file
a privilege motion against Sirmed since their exchange had been reported in the
press. According to Sirmed, Jamaat-e-Islami’s Senator
Ibrahim also reacted to the word martyr similarly.

Lahore, Karachi  February 25 – Banners appear
in cities accusing Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif’s wife Tehmina
Durrani of committing blasphemy in her 1998 bookBlasphemy.

Lahore  April 6 – An attempt by
Christian workers to file the FIR of a blasphemy case against the MD of the
Solid Waste Management department dismissed by an additional district and
sessions judge.

Gujranwala  April 30 – Hundreds of
people attacked a Christian seminary, a church and houses of Christians after
police release two Christians who had been accused of blasphemy from protective
custody.

Sialkot  May – Bookseller
Gulzar Masih accused of committing blasphemy after former partner’s son says his
workers burned pages of the Holy Quran. The dispute is solved by market elders.

Lahore  May 18 – Clerics
attacked blasphemy accused Irfan Rafique’s lawyer at
sessions court and take an undertaking from him that he would not appear before
the court to defend Rafique.

Kahna May 29 – Muhammad Shoaib and three men entered a church in
Lakhoki village and desecrated the Bible.

Lahore  May 30 – Jamiat
Ulema-e-Islam (Samiul Haq) called for the Bible to be banned on account of
allegedly containing blasphemous material

Lahore July 5 – PPP Lahore president Samina Khalid Ghurki accused of
committing blasphemy by clerics.

Lahore  July 12 – 30 Barelvi
clerics issued a fatwa condemning a newspaper advertisement of the Population
Welfare Department which they said insulted the beard. On July 13, Tahafuz
Namoos-e-Rasalat nominates the editors, publishers and printers of Jang,
Nawa-e-Waqt and Daily Express in an application stating they committed
blasphemy by publishing the advertisement. It asks that they be tried along
with the other offenders under Section 295-A, while the chief minister and
chief secretary should be prosecuted under section 109 of the Pakistan Penal
Code.

 

Lahore July 22 – Barelvi clerics protest against the police for not filing an
FIR against a man accused of blasphemy.

September  Samreen Masood, a housewife
linked to blasphemy case demanded protection and justice to herself and her
husband while addressing a press conference held here at a local hotel .She
said that her brother, Raheel Masood Wasti was booked in a blasphemy case
(295-C) a few months back and her family had shifted to a village of Khairpur
district to seek shelter.She said that her brother Raheel was allegedly
involved in desecrating the holy pages of Quran, adding, that the police had already
registered an FIR (301/2010) with the blasphemy charges under section 295-A and
B. Samreen claimed that both accused of blasphemy case, namely Raheel and Zafar
