Niemüllers poem

First they came for the jews, and I did not speak out because I was not jewish

Then they came for the communists, and I did not speak out because I was not a communist

Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out because I was not a socialist

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out because I was not a trade unionist

Then they came for me, and there was no one left to speak out for me

Dr. Phyllis Chesler, Emerita Professor, USA

Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Dr. Phyllis Chesler. I am an Emerita Profesor of Psychology and the author of fourteen books, some of which have been translated into Swedish. I am a human rights and woman’s right activist and have lectured at Swedish universities (Upsalla and Umea).  Some of my work has been translated into both Swedish and Danish. More recently, I have published academic studies on honor killings both in the West and in the Muslim world.

I am writing to you on behalf of Khalid Saeed’s petition to remain in Sweden, a petition which you have denied. I implore you to revisit his case. His life—and Sweden’s reputation for fairness and morality are both at stake.

The Central Council of Ex-Muslims  in Sweden

The following letter, dated the 30′th of June 2011, were sent to the appeal court in Stockholm.

Dear Migration Court Members!

My name is Afsaneh Vahdat and I am Chairman of The Central Council of Ex-Muslims  in Sweden.

The reason I am writing to you is that one of our members, Khalid Saeed, who applied for asylum in Sweden in 2009, has been denied this and now he is in great danger if he is forced to return to Pakistan.

Khalid is an atheist and has left Islam. He could easily be punished for this act and the punishment (for this behavior that is seen as highest degree of blasphemy) is death.

Even if the authorities let him live, there are people all around in Pakistan who gladly kill him and terrorize his family for his apostasy. Also some of Khalid’s family has broken contact with him. There are many people who know about the case and that Khalid is no longer a Muslim. There is undoubtedly a huge risk for the family if they return to their home country, Pakistan.

Therefore, The Central Council of Ex-Muslims in Sweden, ask You to make a new hearing in this case and let Khalid’s family stay protected in Sweden .

Yours sincerely

Afsaneh Vahdat

Chairman of The Central Council of Ex-Muslims in Sweden.

Eticha is a virtual think tank established with the purpose to strengthen democracy and human rights in Europe. Eticha is independent of party politics and religious affiliations. Eticha is a virtual network where a variety of active individuals contribute knowledge and other resources on a case by case basis. We are always interested in involving new persons, handle new cases and discuss new ideas.

We believe that the modern ‘kaleidoscopically’ composition of society makes it difficult to formulate new visions acceptable to everyone. Allowing ideologies that actively strive to remove democracy and individual human rights to have more and more influence on all processes in our societies makes us fear that the current societal structure cannot be preserved, due to the extensive changes now taking place in Europe.

In Eticha we therefore have decided to stand up for people that with their lives on stake fights and speak up against religious as well as ideological suppression.

Best regards

Hans Erling Jensen, Chairman

In Sweden the Pakistani man Khalid and his family has been condemned to deportation in spite the fact that his life is on stage if he is sent back to Pakistan – and he even didn’t nothing criminal here! He had just left islam and turned atheist! (Take a look at his own blog and the story bout him and his family)! He should have made a research and observed, that a muslim that change his view and become atheist does not fit into the Swedish “doll society”! A muslim is religious! If somebody leaves this culture there are no pardon. It is not even worth to write about it in the media. Atheism is, as you know, a western invention which the “white man” use to oppress other cultures with.

All though the Saeed case cannot ethically be anchored in the “Bäckströmsk” teaching about the only good – then for us unbelievers it is hard not to be aware of (and protest) on their tragic destiny!

IHEU – International Humanist Ethical Union

IHEU is an international organization which actively works for human rights and supports victims of blasphemy. During the past years it has taken up several incidents in which apostates were persecuted. One well know blasphemy case supported by IHEU was the case of Dr. M. Younus Shaikh, who was accused of blasphemy, threatened death penalty according to section 295/ C of the Pakistan Penal Code.

According to IHEU it is quite well known in Pakistan that torture prevails both in police and military custody. Torture is still the primary method by which crimes are investigated. The law of the land is silent on the issue of torture by the law enforcement agencies.

The situation for atheists and apostates in Pakistan is below all standards. To send Khalid back to such a society is simply not acceptable.

When religious freedom is discussed people usually forget that it includes not only the right to believe, but also the right to NOT believe in certain religions.

When religious oppression is discussed the focus is usually on Muslims, Christians, Jews, Hindus, Bahá’í etc. All too often those who “don’t believe in anything” are forgotten. Well, atheists or secularists DO believe in many good things; freedom, equality, freedom of speech… Khalid may not believe in God, but he believes in Humanity. It is important that we, as humans/humanists, don’t abandon him and his family.
